Excellent turnout for today's ride: Mary Ann, Matthew, Bob, Jerry, Les, and me. We had the best of weather for this one: sunshine, mild temps, breezes - just perfect!
Lots of folks have been dealing with injuries and time off the bike lately, so today was a chance to ease back into ride mode. Accordingly, Matt and Mary Ann had to forgo the 2.5 mile climb up to Valley Center, but the rest of us pressed on. Happily the entire way up the hill was tailwind-aided.
After a brief hilltop recovery, it was time to zip along down Lilac Road. I tried to lure the group into trying Sierra Rojo Road (walk-your-bike-steep-unless-you-have-a-34tooth-cog) but no one was falling for it.
The Old Castle climb was made a bit more interesting by the impromptu contest that Jerry and I had chasing down a struggling rider who had a quarter mile head start on us - yeah, we caught him at the top. The subsequent drop down to Old 395 was fast enough, in the 38-40mph range, to make it exciting. And fortunately Jerry flatted at the bottom of the hill and not on the way down!
The way back had us climbing more hills, the longest was south of Lawrence Welk Resort, another 2+ mile incline, but with a headwind this time. And of course we took the pleasant descent through Jesmond Dene. Peterson's served as the coffee break location for us once we got back into town.
Next week, we go coastal: Del Mar Breeze Date: Tuesday July 24, 2012 Time: 8:30am An easy ride to the ocean for some cool breezes!
