Three riders for today's hot and hilly ride to Ramona on the Highland Valley Loop: Liz, Bob, and me. Early conditions were pleasant enough and we added a twist to the Tierra Bonita climb - more hill - by turning up Donart Drive, which allowed us to get a nice boost to the downhill by including Ipava Drive.
Encouraged by that addition, we decided to tack on Garden Road and the steep Sycamore Canyon Road hill. We were slowed down a bit at the top of the hill to make a flat tire repair and started feeling the heat when we resumed climbing up Scripps Poway Parkway.
Bottles were nearly empty by the time we crested Mount Woodson, so we interrupted our descent with a stop at Daniel's Market. That place has the best AC and a great selection of drinks for the dehydrated cyclist.
The Highland Valley Road section was great, as always, even though it was warm and there were headwinds while riding through the grasslands. But that couldn't take anything away from the twisty road and fast descents.
Nevertheless, let's hope for cooler weather on next week's ride... Lilac-n-Back Date: Tuesday July 17, 2012 Time: 8:30am Out to Valley Center and Lilac, Old Castle to Old 395, returning through Jesmond Dene and Escondido.
