Wow, once again we managed to get seven riders... so close to raising the weekly ridership record. Today we welcomed two new riders Matt, and Bob (husband of Beth.) The rest of the field was rounded out by Beth, Mary Ann, Maurice, Rick, and me.
It was overcast, but not really cold - very good cycling weather actually. I was guilty of starting a bit too fast (sometimes the tortise dreams of being a rabbit) but got my comeuppance later. Maurice showed us how to descend Mount Woodson, after spotting me a quarter-mile he led Beth and Matt down to catch me and then launch a lickety-split run to the Highland Valley Road turn-off. The HVR section was fun as always, gotta love those open grassland vistas that give way to the rollers, groves, oaks, and twisty descents. Great scenery, despite the low clouds that obscured the mountaintops (to paraphrase Beth, "Even with the clouds, it's still a cyclist paradise." Well, true enough, but while the Highland Valley Loop is high in cycling value, it's low in Coffee Shop options... so no stop for pastries today.
Next week's ride:
Date: Tuesday April 26, 2011
Out to Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Del Mar for some easy riding on the Coast Highway.
Reminder... Saturday, the 23rd of April, a VVV special event, the Borrego Five-O. Featuring an 11 mile climb up the Montezuma Grade. I'm planning to leave Rancho Bernardo at 6:30am and have one rider in my carpool. I could take two more. Contact me if interested - I'm planning to be back in RB by about 5:00pm, but don't hold me to it.
Date: Saturday April 23, 2011
Start/Finish: Borrego Springs (Christmas Circle)
Distance: 50 miles
Elev. Gain: 4,600'
Lastly, I'm almost done with the web page for the Thursday time trial. It will be an out-n-back route with two options: a 5 mile short course and a 10 mile long course. It looks like Cinco de Mayo will be the first riding.
