It was group choice for today's route and it turned out pretty well, despite my suggestion of a loop out over Mount Woodson and back on Highland Valley Road. Saner heads prevailed and thanks to Lizzie we were soon clipping in with Rancho Santa Fe as the destination. Our peloton leaving Valle Verde Park consisted of Liz, Mary Ann, Jerry and me, and we met up with Shawna on the western edge of Rancho Bernardo.
The RSF route request had two parts: travel outbound on Artesian/Zumaque road, and find some new by-ways within the Rancho. So... that's exactly what we did! The dip down Artesian was fast and fun, but we paid the price for it by having to climb Zumaque. Yikes! I think some sections had to be well over 15%. The next part through RSF was much easier. Lots of nice landscaping, few cars, a loop around Lago Lindo, another zippy downhill (on Via Fortuna), and a long ascent back up San Elijo Road. Shady trees, hills, and new roads for most of the crew. Everyone seemed to like this route, enough so that I've mapped it, as the Rancho Santa Fe Ramble, and we'll revisit it in future.
After all that, it was Break Time and Cafe Positano was right there for us. More thanks to Liz who sprang for the refreshments. Having savored that bit of relaxation, we had no trouble with avoiding the mountain-climb up Artesian by taking San Dieguito Road home. Not that we could totally escape the hills, or the heat that was starting to kick in. Just to be safe, we made a final stop at the 7-11 on Bernardo Center Drive for some hydration, and energy to power the last few miles.
Speaking of the heat... starting immediately, both the Tuesday and Thursday rides will start 1/2 hour earlier to provide a little more time in the cooler morning air. That means the Tuesday Ride will be at 7:30AM and the Thursday Time Trial will be at 8:30AM.
Next week's route...
