Well, we finished 2013 the way we started it, with a riding of the Fallbrook Metric Century. This time we rolled out of VV Park with 20 riders, compared to 8 last January 1, but not everyone was in for the full distance. Of the total crew, about half did half the distance, turning back at Mountain Meadows, while the rest of us pushed on to Fallbrook. Unfortunately our long-distance group broke up a bit when Mike and Hubert were delayed by a flat repair.
The remainder of the long-riders made a stop at Pala Mesa Market and were treated to samples of the local BBQ. It was pretty good: the Birria-Or-Bust Ride is definitely changing to the BBQ-Or-Bust Ride in 2014. Sean also led us into Fallbrook on Tecalote Drive and Ranger Road; they run beside Old 395 but are much better to ride on - hardly any cars and nicer views.
This week's ridership: 20 Cyclists (7W / 13M)
Next week we start 2014 with the...
Wildcard Ride (...or the ride formerly known as ACHD.)
Date: Tuesday January 7, 2014
Group choice for route... Usually easy??
Happy New Year Everyone,
The Jesmond Dene Jaunt proved to be a popular route for the day before Christmas. Not too long - not too hilly - just the thing for a pre-holiday workout. Oh yeah, there was that one guy who had to get some extra miles and pedaled off to the left while the whole group went right... but at least he supplied some pix from his ride, and the main crew had a nice spin up through the oaks and back (even with a couple of flats!)
A few folks made it to EscoGelato today but mostly it was ride-ride and then head home quickly for the last minute preparations!
This week's ridership: 19 Cyclists (9W / 10M) Welcome to first-timers Michael H., and Tryna.
Next week we ring out the Old Year with the...
Fallbrook Metric Century
Date: Tuesday December 31, 2013
Plenty of scenery along Old 395, Live Oak Park Rd, Green Canyon Road, Camino Del Rey, and Jesmond Dene Road.
Merry Christmas Everyone,
It was a bit cloudy and cool at 9AM, but it turned out to be a great day to ride. Blue skies and sunshine were the order of the day. And we started with a special treat: Pam visited us at the start to announce the launch of FloraVelo and show off the first products. The designs are awesome and Pam's done a great job of bringing her vision to market!
The prospect of steep climbing on the Double Peak Challenge didn't seem to dissuade anyone. The turnout was excellent and we had four first-time folks: Terrill, Burt, John, and Sean. Welcome Aboard to each of you!
San Elijo Hills has a coffee shop again! Stoked has opened in the old coffee shop location, and it's a bit more than just coffee now. A bit pricey but very nice!
This week's ridership: 16 Cyclists (4W / 12M)
Next week we have a low-key Christmas Eve ride scheduled...
Jesmond Dene Jaunt
Date: Tuesday December 24, 2013
An easy route through Escondido and out to Jesmond Dene.
Well, the last few days of clouds, cold, and wind may have cut down the ridership today, but the handful of us that rolled out of VV Park were rewarded with excellent conditions. Cool, sunny, and nearly windless! We made it up to Valley Center with a minimal delay and enjoyed coffee and cookies at Java Journey while soaking up some sunshine. The ride back was also peppy - even the single flat repair done by Paul was accomplished in near-record time!
This week's ridership: 8 Cyclists (2W / 6M)
Next week we take it up a notch...
Double Peak Challenge
Date: Tuesday December 17, 2013
Out to San Marcos and then up and over Twin Oaks, with a sidetrip to the Double Peak summit. Returning on Elfin Forest/Harmony Grove.
A good turnout for today's Group Choice ride, despite the cloudy and cool conditions. We headed out of Poway/RB, westbound on the 56 bikepath, which saved us from having to make any decisions about turns. It was just pedal, pedal, pedal, until there was no more path!
At that point the options were either to return on San Dieguito Road or on Sorrento Valley Blvd. Well... SVB qualifies as a "Big Enough" climb to make it interesting, and we rarely have it on our radar, so naturally that was the choice. Most everyone passed up the coffee stop today, but Hubert, Rich, and I enjoyed some Starbucksian ambiance in Rancho Bernardo to uphold tradition.
This week's ridership: 12 Cyclists (4W / 8M) Including one new rider: Rich. Welcome Aboard!
Next week we head up to Valley Center...
Date: Tuesday December 10, 2013
Out-n-Back to Valley Center with a stop at Java Journey.
