Thanks to all the Gents who made it out to VV Park for today's Raincheck Ride. We had an Eight-man peloton and perfect weather for the Woods Valley & Lake Wohlford route. Yup, I said Gents and Eight-man... No Gurlz today... Wassup? ...maybe there was some last-minute Xmas Shopping to attend to?
The route was pretty much as planned, but we did add on a side trip through Hidden Valley Estates, which resulted in a Strava segment "Top Ten" listing for Les and Ed. The coffee stop at Smokey's was a good one - as usual, but no one was having poached egg on a bed of spinach today. It was a lot of pancakes, breakfast burrito, and fried egg sandwiches with ham.
No ride next week, 'cuz it's Christmas.
Our next VVV ride will be on New Year's Day. It'll be up against a lot of competition from all those other groups that like to start the year off right. Who can blame them? I don't know what the route will be yet, but it will be somewhat longer than usual.
Splendid weather for the Del Dios Loop today and a good crew to go along with it: ten riders leaving from VV Park this morning. Welcome to Joe, who made his initial VVV ride today!
There air was a bit crisp at the start but the first big hill out of Rancho Bernardo was enough for me to start shedding layers. That exercise continued for one or another of us all the way to the top of Del Dios.
I have to say that the new pavement on Via De La Valle, just after turning off Apajo, is a great improvement over the rutted, broken surface that used to add to the climbing difficulty.
We had good luck getting through road work areas today, both early on, at Camino Del Norte, and later, at Del Dios - each location had someone wave us through. So Nice to pass by a long line of cars.
Our coffee stop was at Belen Bakery, it was late in the ride but it's worth pedaling a little longer for their freshly baked goods. I just wish I had extra carrying capacity today - their ciabatta loaves are really good.
Next week's ride will be VVV's last for 2012, not because the world is supposed end on 12/21/12 (as confirmed by Aussie PM Julia Gillard), but because December's last Tuesday is also Christmas Day!
Closing out 2012... Lake Wohlford & Woods Valley Date: Tuesday December 18, 2012 Time: 8:30am We'll do the Valley Center loop in reverse of the direction indicated on the map, so that means we'll ride Woods Valley first, and then make a stop at the Lake Wohlford Cafe before descending Lake Wohlford Road.
You never know what you'll come across on a long ride. Les and I did 130 miles today, from Poway to Capistrano Beach and back. Along the way we got to:
Ride through fog so thick it was almost rain, saw a guy leading a two mule train on the San Luis Rey River Bike path, were surprised to find Marine training had closed our route through Camp Pendleton, got to do an unexpected ride on Interstate 5, got some sunshine and great ocean views, saw a tractor hauling the San Onofre nuclear power plant's generator, passed by police and fire trucks responding to a car crash, and had the opportunity to use our lights and ride over Lake Hodges in the dark.

"Great ride today as usual. An evenly balanced group of 3 guys and 3 gals. Jerry tried to find us, but decided, by the time I returned his call, that we weren't going far enough for him to chase us down. No mishaps or mechanicals, though there sure was an abundance of horn honking going on....don't know why today would be any different than most in that regard. The group was patient and good natured about the mid-course route changes. I introduced the concept of a bummel: http://www.wordnik.com/words/bummel. We tried to stop at Sweetest Buzz on Camino Del Sur near Westview High School for our repast, but sadly, discovered it closed and cleaned out. We continued north to KiJ's http://www.yelp.com/biz/kijs-cafe-san-diego. Pleasant enough.... the company is all that matters anyway."
Next week's ride...Del Dios Loop Date: Tuesday December 11, 2012 Time: 8:30am Out to Fairbanks Ranch, back on the Del Dios, with a coffee stop in Escondido.
