A belated ride report this week... was it because yesterday seemed to be a day in Watermelon Sugar? Or maybe I just ran out of time to get it together! Whatever the reason, the ride itself was a fun one and we had a nice group of four taking part in the Sprinter Special II outing.
The first part of the of the trip was all bike, as we headed out over Lake Hodges and then over to Harmony Grove and Elfin Forest. The riding there was, as always, a nice combo of hills, descents, good road, low traffic, oak trees, and rural vistas. Leaving San Elijo Hills we headed towards the coast on some new roads for VVV: Alga Road and Aviara Parkway. Those two also presented some nice rollers to keep it interesting as we headed towards the coast. We should have turned on Poinsettia, Lane but passed it and took Palomar Airport Road instead... OK, but we cheated oourselves out of 1.5 miles of coastal views!
Part two of the ride was super easy - hop onto the Sprinter and get hauled back to Escondido. The Sprinter has to be the greatest transportation bargain in Socal: $1.00 for the trip from Oceanside to Escondido. OK, that's the Senior Fare, but I think it's just $2.00 for young whippersnappers. I was going to take some train pix, but instead found an excellent set from a SpokkerJones that exactly capture the ride: Sprinter Photos. BTW, I should point out that while Bob, Mike, and I took the Sprinter home, the intrepid Beth, ever in need of additional miles (?) cycled back: Good on ya, mate!
Next week, it is once again time for the...
Date: Tuesday January 3, 2012
Anything Can Happen Day. Group choice for route... Usually easy??
Cheers and Happy New Year!
Well, it was supposed to be the Rancho Santa Fe Ramble, but we decided to pull a Lucy Move and changed the route. Bob, Beth, and I made up the group today and we were all in agreement to go for something a little easier than doing the Zumaque climb.
So... we went out to Sycamore Canyon Road and visited Gooden Ranch. Nice scenery out there and we cheated on the steepest part of Sycamore by joining the road at Scripps Poway Parkway. Sorry Jerry! I hope you enjoyed your ride out to RSF!
Next week, we cycle to Oceanside and take the Sprinter back to Escondido:
Sprinter Special II
Date: Tuesday December 27, 2011
Poway to Escondido and on through Harmony Grove/Elfin Forest. Out to the coast and then north to Oceanside Transit Center to return on the Sprinter.
Merry Christmas To All!
Thx to Beth and Bob for joining in, all or part, on today's ride up Mount Palomar. The early morning cold proved to be nowhere near what the upper elevations of the mountain had to offer. Kudos to Beth for burning up the hill - dang who'd a thunk she'd believe me when I said you only needed the middle ring of a triple to get to the top? Dropped me and my puny 34t ring like a stone.
And did I say it was cold?? Going up was manageable but descending... yikes... thought my eyes would freeze and shatter. It's all relative though, getting down to the 48-50F zone felt tropical. I tried to get some snow pix, but they just show a lot of featureless white! The bikes look happy though, and the mountain top wreathed in clouds is alright too.
We had good luck with today's Java Journey ride - crisp temps and plenty of clouds, but no wind or rain!
After answering a small flurry of texts and voice mails, Matt and I determined that we were the crew for the day, except for Mary Ann, who had made an early start. So we rolled out and began a leisurely chase, almost too relaxed I guess, because Mary Ann was turning back from the Valley Center climb before we met up with her. Despite professing a need to be back for an urgent appointment, we convinced her that climbing the hill up to Valley Center was more important than meeting with the undercover agent of a deposed president who needed her $5000 cashier's check to help them move large sums of money out of their country. But in exchange we had to make the top of the hill our turnaround point for the day - no Java!!
Next week, we head west (...Caffe Positano stop?):
Rancho Santa Fe Ramble
Date: Tuesday December 20, 2011
Tree, hills, and mostly low-traffic.
Well, it seemed that today's ACHD Ride was teetering on the edge of the "Ain't Gonna Happen" cliff. But we don't wanna go there, so I decided to slug it out on the road! Mary Ann and I managed to find 20+ miles of the flattest ground in Poway and made the most of the beautiful weather this morning. Topped it off with a stop at Einstein Bagels... almost too civilized!
Next week, we'll be riding to Valley Center and starting at 9:00am due to popular demand...
Date: Tuesday December 13, 2011
Out-n-Back to Valley Center with a stop at Java Journey.
