Super weather today; despite the prediction of strong Santa Ana winds, the reality was mild temps and light breezes. Our route was the challenging Woods Valley & Lake Wohlford: Climbing? Check. Oak-lined roads? Check. Great views and a twisty-fast descent? Check and Check. And, for about half of us, the ride also included a stop at the World-Famous Smokey's Lake Wohlford Cafe, where you can get a healthy salad or a cholesterol-loaded fried egg sandwich!
This week's ridership: 17 Cyclists (4W / 13M)
With a Welcome Aboard to new rider Vernon!
Next week, the Wildcard Ride route is pre-determined, but still wild...
Palomar: Mountain Madness
Date: Tuesday December 2, 2014
Palomar via the South Grade!
Today's Rancho Santa Fe Ramble was blessed with blue skies and pleasant temps, which enhanced the roll through Rancho Santa Fe's quiet roads... and the trip up the ever-popular Zumaque climb with its >15% grade.
We also got to welcome Hubert back from his annual Canadian Exile today, as well as enjoy riding with Ramona Fun Rider regular, Steve H., who made a rare VVV appearance!
Caffe Positano in RSF provided the Americanos, Hammerheads, and Pumpkin Spice Lattes!
This week's ridership: 14 Cyclists (3W / 11M)
Next week we visit Valley Center:
Woods Valley & Lake Wohlford
Date: Tuesday November 25, 2014
Only one Big Hill and lots of oak trees.
The cloud cover seemed disinclined to break up today, providing a rare opportunity to head up to Valley Center without being roasted on the climb. Great riding weather all day, really. The Lilac-N-Back route has never been cooler!
Our coffee stop today was at the Pointed Roof Deli. It's well-situated for this ride - just after Valley Center and Old Castle climbs, and before the Champagne climb. It also has lots of outdoor seating and a nice selection of sandwiches for the indulgent!
So the ride went along just great until... just when it seemed we were home free... Pssst...! Pssst...!! Pssst...!!! Three flats in rapid succession for three different riders! C'est La Vie De Velo, Mes Amies!
This week's ridership: 13 Cyclists (3W / 10M)
Next time, we get to climb Zumaque!
Rancho Santa Fe Ramble
Date: Tuesday November 18, 2014
Explore Rancho Santa Fe's by-ways. Trees, hills, and mostly low-traffic.
The group was a bit smaller than usual today, but we put a few good Wildcard Ride miles under the wheels all the same. Beth and Bob provided some nice pulls with their new Cannondale tandem. (No good trying to hide at the back, guys... Everybody wants to draft the tandem!)
Caffe Positano provided the coffee stop - it was hard to get going again afterwards. Fortunately they don't serve wine or we might still be there!
This week's ridership: 9 Cyclists (2W / 7M)
Next week we head up to...
Date: Tuesday November 11, 2014
Out to Valley Center and Lilac, Old Castle to Old 395, returning through Jesmond Dene and Escondido.
Fun Times riding the Borrego Five-O today. The perfection of Borrego's weather soon enough gave way to the windy chill of Ranchita, but despite some shivers and numb fingers we all made the (Montezuma) Grade.
Congrats on their first-time up to: Judy, Bud, Eduardo, and Eytan!
Kudos to Jerry, who finished the last 20 miles without a saddle, and also to Mr. Grin, who took one for the team!
