We made a slight change to the scheduled route today, instead of returning on Elfin Forest we headed south to avoid the construction zone around Harmony Grove. The revised route went through Rancho Santa Fe, wound down through Los Arboles, and then back up on San Dieguito Road. It was shorter by about 10 miles but still had plenty of climbing. Hopefully, we still burned enough calories to help provide a pre-Thanksgiving deficit. Our stop today was at the Caffe Positano in Rancho Santa Fe. A nice setting and plenty of room for bikes. Hmmm... maybe we gained back a few calories!
This week's ridership: 14 Cyclists (6W / 8M)
Next week, it's that time again...
Date: Tuesday December 3, 2013
Anything Can Happen Day. Group choice for route.
Well, I'll try do the report with a little help from my friends: thanks to Jerry and Mary Ann for leading, and to Judy for pictures! A great job done by all on a day with clouds, wet roads, and record turnout. New riders included Kim Z and David N: Welcome Aboard!
The peloton split into two main groups today: long miles & short miles. I'm told the route will need to change, as one of our roads has been given over to new construction. Only one flat and at least a few folks made a stop at Peterson's Donut Corner. Dang! I missed out on that too??
This week's ridership: 20 Cyclists (7W / 13M)
Next week's ride is the classic...
Del Dios & Elfin Forest
Date: Tuesday November 26, 2013
Del Dios descent and Elfin Forest inbound to Escondido.
The Woods Valley & Lake Wohlford route kept our legs working today! That big hill up to Valley Center is the ride centerpiece and usually the sun beats down us during the climb, but today the clouds lingered while we worked our way up, allowing us to stay fairly cool. Kudos to Robert, Eduardo, and Colleen for setting the pace up to Valley Center.
All the weather reports were forecasting temps above 80 degrees, so we by-passed the Lake Wohlford Cafe today and made our stop at EscoGelato. It never got all that warm but the gelato was still worth stopping for.
Today we also welcomed Hubert back to the group. He's here escaping the Canadian winter and totally recovered from his crash last April.
This week's ridership: 13 Cyclists (4W / 9M)
Next week's ride...
A Bit Of Harmony
Date: Tuesday November 19, 2013
Ride through northern Escondido into San Marcos; side trip into Harmony Grove on return to Escondido.
Today's Group Choice ride ended up being on the "hilly" side, including as it did the Bernardo Winery, Highland Valley, Old San Pasqual, and Idaho climbs. But the suggestion was for riding "The Old Milk Run" route and there's a lot of up-and down on that one. Fortunately, we managed to fit in a stop at EscoGelato once we got out of the hills. And many thanks to Ed Shepherd for treating the entire crew to the gelato!
This week's ridership: 16 Cyclists (4W / 12M) Welcome Aboard to Cyclo-Vet Bud!
Next week we visit Valley Center...
Lake Wohlford & Woods Valley
Date: Tuesday November 12, 2013
Scenic riding with plenty of hills!
A great riding of the Borrego Five-O loop today. It was the first time up Montezuma Grade for a number of riders and they enjoyed possibly the best weather conditions we've ever had for this route. The turnout was an impressive twelve cyclists and included two VVV first-timers, Jon, and Jack.
Everyone rode hard and we kept right on schedule, despite two flats along the way. Great climbing efforts from Jon, Jerry, Eugene, Jack and Les. And Kudos to Marcus who drove hard on San Felipe Road and provided a huge pull for us to Scissors Crossing!
A visit to Carmelita's wrapped up the ride: tacos and cold beer!
