Today's ride was another out-n-back style route, a visit to Java Journey in Valley Center. Attendance was good: 8 riders, and the weather was highly cooperative: a few early clouds, but mostly sunshine. Hopefully, all enjoyed the opportunity to work the big hill up to Valley Center and sail back down it!
Think about where you'd like to ride to next week... ACHD Ride Date: Tuesday December 4, 2012 Time: 8:30am Anything Can Happen Day. Group choice for route... Usually easy??
We started out with a nice group of nine cyclists for the Birria Or Bust route and got to welcome another new rider: Susan. Everyone seemed ready for it to be colder than it actually was today, but since we started with a long downhill to Lake Hodges the layers didn't start getting packed away until Escondido.
At Jesmond Dene we had to part company with the time-constrained: Liz , Mike and Mary Ann. They got to shoot down through the oaks without the work of the hills on Old 395 - seems like having dessert without finishing your veggies to me!
Navigation was beyond easy on this ride: just keep riding north, over any and all hills that spring up in front of you, until you see the Pala Taco Shop. Along the way, we discovered that the gigantic mass of highway construction that was going on in Bonsall for the last few years has now largely relocated to the Old 395/I-15 interchange. Expect that to be there for awhile.
The taco shop fare was delish, as always, but there will soon be competition for our ride lunch: the M&M Rib Shack is slated to open next door in January. Who knows... we may have to change the ride name to Rib Shack-n-Back.
Our ride next week is short and sweet: Java Journey Date: Tuesday November 27, 2012 Time: 8:30am Out-n-Back to Valley Center with a stop at Java Journey. Just one kicker of a hill...
Another record-breaking turnout as we rolled out VV Park with a dozen riders for the Sprint Special II. Welcome to new VVV riders: Colleen and Cindy, who also got to ride the Sprinter for the first time today. Along the way we joined by Jerry and a third new rider for VVV, Ray Mounts. Ray gets Extra Credit for using a cue sheet and chasing us down solo, all the way from VV Park, through Elfin Forest, before catching us in San Elijo Hills.
We topped out briefly with 14 riders, before folks had to start taking bail-out options to get back home. Everyone had the pleasure of Harmony Grove/Elfin Forest, but for those who went on for the full Sprinter Special experience, we had plenty of coastal hills, ocean views, and of course the train ride from Oceanside to Escondido.
We had to make due with a quick visit to the coffee and food carts at the train platform in Oceanside today. I thought the hot dog and coke there was pretty good. Luck was with us on the train and we were able to commandeer the entire bike area for the whole ride back - if a single disabled person had gotten aboard we would have had to remove four bikes!
The coda to the ride was the trip back from the Escondido Transit center to VV Park, just over 10 miles but when your legs have decided they were done for the day it can be tough.
Next week, longer and hillier (allow extra time)...
Birria or Bust! Date: Tuesday November 20, 2012 Time: 8:30am Leaving Poway north to Escondido and then taking Old 395 to Pala Mesa. Turnaround at Pala Taco Shop - birria consumption is optional!
We had another nice turnout this week with ten riders for Group Choice Day. Special note for the return of Rick and Mike P.: Good to see you both back on the Tuesday Ride.
Not many scenic pictures today, it was a bit of an urban ACHD Ride, although we did get to ride some nice hills. Jerry made up for missing the Montezuma Grade on Saturday and burned his way up most of them. I'm sure everyone enjoyed the descent into Sorrento Valley - seemed like there were lots of 40+mph readings.
Only one flat, and one extreeemely slow tip-over (oh, the embarrassment for me.) Fortunately, the coffee and sweets at Caffe Positano helped soothe the lingering aches.
Hey, we passed at least half a dozen polling places today, I hope you all have voted!
Next week, something different: bike & train! Sprinter Special II Date: Tuesday November 13, 2012 Time: 8:30am Poway to Escondido and on through Harmony Grove/Elfin Forest. Out to the coast and then north to Oceanside Transit Center to return on the Sprinter.
Note: One-way Sprinter fare is only $2 (only $1 for Seniors with ID.)
Best ever turnout for VVV's Borrego Five-O ride: seven riders took up the challenge of the Montezuma Grade and all arrived at Ranchita for the obligatory Yeti photo.
The weather was nearly perfect with only mild headwinds on San Felipe Road and through Sentenac Canyon. Our only disappointment was at Tamarisk Grove; despite the news from the randonneurs who were there on Thursday, the campground hasn't opened yet, so... no bathrooms and no water. Oh well, it was only another 11 miles or so back into town.
The post-ride beers and combo plates at Carmelita's provided just the right ending for the day!
