Today's ride saw the trio of Beth, Bob, and me rolling out of VV Park just at the stroke of eight. Hopefully no one missed the notices about this week's special start time and showed up at 8:30 wondering where everyone was! After we crossed over Lake Hodges, we were joined at the Sunset Drive parking area by Mike, who was not going to be denied rolling over some new roads.
The climb up to Valley Center was a tester, as always, but we all made it up without coughing up a lung. The next section along Lilac Road had some fast descents and even faster trucks whizzing by! It got much quieter when the traffic to Old Castle Road split off, and better still when we entered West Lilac Road. There are a few pix of that section below. The descent of Circle R Road was over way too fast, but enjoyable all the same. More hills along Old 395 and a good descent through Jesmond Dene just about wrapped it up. The wheels were spinning today - we were back by 11:30 - so no time for a cafe stop.
Next week we're back to an 8:30am start...
ACHD Ride - Anything Can Happen Day - Group Choice!
Date: Tuesday December 6, 2011
Nice turnout today for the Del Dios Loop: Mary Ann, Beth & Bob, Mike, Robert, and me, were joined by just-in-time arrivals, Raul and Manny, who were visiting from the cycling nirvana of Davis. For two flatlanders, they acquitted themselves nicely on the hills that we were able to offer them on today's route... you guys are welcome to ride with us anytime you make a return visit.
Weather was perfect today and it seemed like we were out of Rancho Bernardo and flying down San Dieguito Road before you could blink. The hill up from Fairbanks Ranch to Rancho Santa Fe was a nice appetizer for the Del Dios climb to Lake Hodges. On the way up to the lake we were treated to a helicopter hauling felled trees out of the riverbed below the dam - that was an unexpected sight. Up at the top, we parted company with our visitors, who had to turn back there for a fast trip down to Del Mar while we got to continue on to the edge of Harmony Grove before heading into Escondido. In town we made a stop at Belen Bakery (yikes, two weeks in a row there), enjoyed their baked goods, and some of us packed out bread loaves for home consumption.
Next week, we go a tad longer and will start a bit earlier, 8:00AM...
Date: Tuesday November 29, 2011
Out to Valley Center and Lilac, Old Castle to Old 395, returning through Jesmond Dene and Escondido.
Happy Thanksgiving Day to All!
Well, most of us were fooled by the predictions of a chilled, drizzley start for our ride today. Lots of extra gear didn't get used, but I think we'll trade pleasant temps and blue skies for having to tote a vest or arm warmers.
Rolling out of VV Park it was: Beth, Bob, Mary Ann, and me. We were met at Highland Valley Road by Shawna, who didn't get quite as much time to warm-up for the biggest climb of the day. After sumitting HVR, we peeled off down Bandy Canyon and did a short section on dirt, on Ysabel Creek Road, to get to the north side of San Pasqual Valley. The way back into Escondido then took us on Old Milky Way, Old San Pasqual Road, Idaho Street, and in-town on Chestnut Street. At least some of those roads were first-time rides for a few of us.
In Escondido we made a stop at the new Belen Bakery location, which has much better seating than the old bakery. They still have the same great bread, sandwiches, pastries, and coffee!
Next week's route is an old favorite...
Del Dios Loop
Date: Tuesday November 22, 2011
Out to Fairbanks Ranch, back on the Del Dios, with a stop at Nayeli's in Escondido.
Another good turnout today - seven riders: Beth, Bob, Jerry, Mary Ann, Shawna, Ava, and me. Special welcome to Ava, who made her first VVV ride today.
Our early going was marked by a bit of lingering morning chilliness, but layers were coming off by the time we crossed over Lake Hodges. The ride up to Valley Center went well, although the climb there was hampered for Jerry by a thorn-induced flat. He managed to catch us at the end of Woods Valley Road. So while Jerry had to hammer up the hill and through the woods, the rest of us enjoyed a leisurely pace and took in the scenery!
Our coffee stop at the Lake Wohlford Cafe was awesome, as usual... mmmm, I can't resist their fried egg sandwich with a hot cup of coffee. (Lizzie: You Shoulda Been There!) After fixing another post-stop flat (Mary Ann's this time), we made the ear-popping descent down to Escondido, which by itself is worth doing the whole route!
Next week, another new-ish route...
The Old Milk Run
Date: Tuesday November 15, 2011
"Three's the charm" they say, and in a sense our third month-in-a-row attempt to reach the fabled Juice-A-Rama was a success: Yes, it didn't rain on the ACHD ride! It was unusually foggy at times, but not a droplet of misty wet stuff fell on us. In a bit of a weather reversal, we started with sun and then went into the foggy stuff. That made for interesting vistas as we rode westward to Fairbanks Ranch, but we knew it would eventually burn off. The tentative route was to get to Torrey Pines, and we approached the coast, but started to become short of time, so... we weren't able to loop all the way to Torrey Pines before turning south towards the heart of Traffic-Land (aka Sorrento Valley/Mira Mesa). But we did get to ride up Lusk Blvd., where we viewed the massive WaterRidge cascading fountain, and marveled at the enormity of the Qualcomm campus.
Alas, our eventual arrival at Juice-A-Rama proved too late: in the three months since the idea first came up the store has gone Belly Up, but not as a southern venue of that famous tavern, no... it was closed down, dead, and gone! Yeah, that's why we call it "Anything Can Happen Day." On that note, we did get to see some ginormous wind turbine blades being transported north on the I-15. Dang, wish I had gotten a pic of those!
Our ridership consisted of Liz, Jerry, Les, John, Paul, and me. I hope you all had some measure of fun on the ride. It wasn't all beautiful scenery, but I for one still enjoyed the outing!
I haven't posted the rest of the November rides yet, but will do so very soon!
