The Del Dios Loop proved to be a good choice today: it wasn't too, too, hot and that made the hills much more pleasant! The gentle breezes helped as well. I'll keep the verbage to a bare minimum today and let the pictures do the talking ...but I will say that there were no flats... Yea!! ... and we were able to include a gelato stop... Double Yea!!
This week's ridership: 11 Cyclists (5W / 6M) (Welcome Back, Rob!) Next week, September arrives and it's time for the... Wildcard Ride Date: Tuesday September 2, 2014 Time: 9:00am Group choice for route! Cheers, Steve

The ride today was an old favorite route: The Highland Valley Loop. It's a good combination of climbing, well-place flats, grasslands, oaks, and twisty descents. Something for everyone! The bad news is that there were four flat tires today, all within three miles of the finish... Thanks, Goat Heads!
I had the Fly6 in operation today and have included a few screen captures from it in the slideshow. The nice thing about getting pix that way is that I don't have to remember to take out the camera... and I never could perfect my over-shoulder snapshot technique! Our stop today was at Country Wine and Spirits (formerly Daniels West) on Hwy 67 in Ramona. It's a bit tricky for eastbound cyclists to get in and out! They still have a good selection of drinks, but apparently the Boar's Head deli choices haven't made the transition to new ownership. Many people have asked about Jerry's condition after crashing last week. He's doing well, but per the doc's orders will be off the bike for three weeks (so maybe two more to go?) This week's ridership: 9 Cyclists (3W / 6M) Next week we hope for a tailwind to climb up to the dam... Del Dios Loop Date: Tuesday August 26, 2014 Time: 9:00am Out to Fairbanks Ranch, back on the Del Dios, with a coffee stop in Escondido. Cheers, Steve Tough break for Jerry today... while riding along Bear Valley Parkway at the back of the group, he crashed, and banged himself up enough to get the paramedics to bring him to the ER at Palomar Hospital in Escondido. He's since been able to get on FB and posted the following: I've got abrasions on my face right side and back upper right. My neck is a little stiff face is a bit sore but overall I think I'm ok. Everyone had the same question: What happened? Since Jerry was the last rider, we don't have an eyewitness, but speculation is that he may have hit something in the road and lost control. One thing was certain: his bike got messed up badly. Well two things: he's going to be really sore for awhile.
No coffee stop today! This week's ridership: 9 Cyclists (2W / 7M) With a Welcome Back to Pam Long! Next week, it's time for an old favorite... Highland Valley Loop Date: Tuesday August 19, 2014 Time: 9:00am Scenic riding along Highland Valley Road, with plenty of hills. Cheers, Steve Today's route was up for a vote, since it was time for our August Wildcard Ride, but there wasn't much controversy over sticking close to home base - just rolling around the Rancho Bernardo area. We did manage to toss in a few by-roads that allowed for some quiet, traffic-free riding... oh, and... climbing! Yeah, that's the way it is around RB: hills, hills, and more hills.
We took a break at the Edelweiss Bakery in Rancho Bernardo. It's so close to the end of our rides that we rarely stop there, but it is always worth it. They're the Real Deal! This week's ridership: 8 Cyclists (2W / 6M) With a Welcome Back to Joe Rametta! Next week, it's an Up-n-Down ride... Woods Valley & Lake Wohlford Date: Tuesday August 12, 2014 Time: 9:00am Only one Big Hill and lots of oak trees. Cheers, Steve |
