Well, the original plan was to ride the Del Mar Breeze route, but road construction kind of shunted us towards Fairbanks Ranch and that lead to some pleasant wandering through Rancho Santa Fe (up Los Arboles Road and along Stud Loop.) From there it was up and over the big climb on the Del Dios Highway. So, our ride was rather more like the Del Dios Loop today. Oh well, it was good riding all the same - and we included gelato in Escondido - so what could be wrong with that!?! Other highlights: a new FloraVelo design shown by Pam, and a rare appearance by Beth (who seems to have slowed down not one bit!)
This week's ridership: 14 Cyclists (6W / 8M) Next week's ride... ACHD Ride Date: Tuesday September 3, 2013 Time: 8:30am Anything Can Happen Day. Group choice for route! Cheers, Steve

One picture being worth a thousand words, I'm holding back on the prose this week! Many Thanks to Susan for supplying most of the pictures today and to Lisa too for also pitching in with some shots. If you like your pictures to move, then check out Eugene's video of Highland Valley Road: http://youtu.be/1XuGHXh27rw! Lastly a "Welcome Back" to Jeanette - and her new Trek Seven Series TT bike.
This week's ridership: 13 Cyclists (6W / 7M) Next week, we head back to the coast... Del Mar Breeze Date: Tuesday August 27, 2013 Time: 8:30am An easy ride to the ocean for some cool breezes! Cheers, Steve
Another unseasonably cool start to today's ride, but of course the sun was out before we had finished climbing up Highland Valley Road. A bit warm on the climb, but it was still pretty darn good riding out there... no complaints! We had the pleasure of a visiting cyclist today, Mike from Chicago, who's in SoCal for a week and traveling next to Rancho La Puerta in Tecate. We expect a report on how well they prepare the "Watermelon Gazpacho with Basil and Feta" there, Mike!
The Old Milk Run route gave us the usual enjoyment: hard climbs, fast descents, nice scenery, and even a bit of dirt road when we crossed Ysabel Creek. And yes, there was an EscoGelato stop today... I have to say that the Mayan Chocolate gelato was superb. Next week's ride... Highland Valley Loop Date: Tuesday August 20, 2013 Time: 8:30am Scenic riding on Highland Valley Road, with plenty of hills. Lot's of folks were meeting up with us en-route today, I think I got the count right... The Ridership: 15 Cyclists (4W / 11M) Cheers, Steve
Something new for VVV today: a gentle five mile loop around Lake Miramar. The lake road is just one turn after another, but about as flat as can be, which was nice after climbing nearly 1,200 feet over fifteen miles to get there.
On the way back, we introduced a few riders to the bike path along I-15... sharing one of the area's more obscure cycling by-ways. Shortly after leaving the path we found ourselves making a near-mandatory cafe stop at the hard-to-beat Champagne Bakery, where they really do have "too much good stuff." The Ridership: 12 Cyclists (5W / 7M) Next week's ride is an easy one, but add-on loops can be done for the mileage-deprived... The Old Milk Run Date: Tuesday August 13, 2013 Time: 8:30am Foray into the San Pasqual Valley and Escondido. (And maybe make an EscoGelato stop?) Cheers, Steve |
