The crew went a bit longer today, riding a nice 45 mile loop out to Valley Center and then on past Lilac to Old Castle Road before heading back on Old 395. The route had plenty of climbing fun, which was made a little more challenging due to the toasty-warm weather.
I'm happy to report that we got back on track with a tradtional VVV cafe stop today. We've neglected that in the last few rides, but today we visited the Pointed Roof Deli on Old Castle Road - cold drinks were the order of the day there!

Group choice for route... Usually easy??
Well, it was certainly nice to be riding today without worrying about fire, smoke, or ash. Just normal conditions for the Escondido Loop route. We'll take it! The group wasn't too large, which may have contributed to the overall speed of the ride: we were back in VV Park by 11:45. No coffee stop today - just peppy pedaling!

Out to Valley Center and Lilac, Old Castle to Old 395, returning through Jesmond Dene and Escondido.
Seems like Tuesday is the day for bad weather lately. We were slammed by heat and headwinds today. We probably made a good decision not to ride the scheduled Java Journey route... the propspect of a two and a half mile descent while being rocked by 30-40mph gusts was not too enticing! So we went to Plan B: a nice figure-eight route around RB, 4S Ranch, Del Sur, Santa Luz, and Poway. Basically, we went around the area that caught fire just after we passed by - honest, we didn't throw any cigarette butts.
Not many pix today... it was too hard to to control the bike and and snap photos in such strong wind conditions!
This week's ridership: 11 Cyclists (2W / 9M)
Kudos to all who braved the Heat, Hills, and Headwind!

Loop around northeast Escondido on some less-traveled roads.
Big day of climbing on Mount Palomar. Up South Grade - Down East Grade - Up East Grade - Down South Grade!
OK, that pic above was actually from last February, but if today's ride hadn't been cancelled the riding conditions probably would have been just as bad. Of course, since we did cancel, it was really not bad at all... apart from some persistent (but not tornadic) winds.
Oh well, next Tuesday promises to be better, and we ride the...
