Well, we had an even dozen cyclists today and also had some nice riding weather for the spin up to Woods Valley and Lake Wohlford. Oh yeah, it was a bit cloudy and cool at times, but overall: Thumbs Up! And... we also welcomed another VVV first-timer: Damon, who is a Cyclo-Vet friend of Ed.
This ride has a few key elements: the climb up to Valley Center, the scenic Woods Valley/Lake Wohlford section, the Lake Wohlford Cafe stop, and the screaming Lake Wohlford descent.
The climb is a big challenge and everyone seemed to have brought their best efforts for it. The next section of oaks and ranch scenery is a pleasant way to recover a bit from the hill, although there were a few folks cranking it up and making a hard run to the cafe. I can only speculate that it was the allure of giant cinnamon rolls or a fried egg and bacon sandwich that inspired the cafe sprint. As for the finale, that twisting descent from the lake - total fun. (OK, maybe not the first time down, but once you get to know the road: Zoom-Zoom!)
Next week we have ACHD and so the route is TBD... ACHD Ride Date: Tuesday June 4, 2013 Time: 9:00am Anything Can Happen Day. Group choice for route!
A good turnout today for our Little Italy trip with nine riders starting from the park and three pick-ups en route. This route doesn't have a huge amount elevation gain overall, but it packs most of the climbing into a few major hills. In the interest of identifying just which hill was the steepest, here's my data:
Pomerado (southbound) 8%
Pomerado (northbound) 8-9%
Ulric (northbound) 9-10%
Bachman (southbound) 12-13%
Curlew (northbound) The Champ at 17-18%!
Oh, and our stop at Cafe Zuchero provided plenty of gelato and pastry choices to replace some of the calories we burned on those hills. The ride home was blessed by a (mostly) tailwind!
A few folks in Escondido seemed to think we were part of the pro peleton, as we received a some unexpected waves and friendly horn honks. Go figure - none of us were cranking out 800 watts of power - but it's all good.
Sorry to forgo the full ride report, but there are time constraints today. I'll just have to say it was a fun ride and the turnout of nine cyclists was great for a Wednesday rain-delayed outing. And I have to welcome two new riders for VVV: Marcus (husband of Lisa) and their friend James. Also, welcome back to Rick who is well on his way to recovery from hip replacement. Yes, the coffee stop was at Caffe Positano: blueberry cream cheese croissants were the hit of the day!
Next week... Jesmond Dene Jaunt Date: Tuesday May 14, 2013 Time: 9:00am An easy route through Escondido and out to Jesmond Dene.
