It was nice to be back on the road again after having missed last Tuesday due to the weather, and the ten rider turnout was evidence of the great conditions we had today for the Jesmond Dene Jaunt.
The ride was a bit reminiscent of the Fat Tuesday outing, since we once again had a single flat tire and made a visit to Petersons Donut Shop! And although this route was considerably shorter and less hilly, it was nevertheless fun cranking up to Jesmond Dene and swooshing back down.
Next week, it is once again Group Choice... ACHD Ride Date: Tuesday March 5, 2013 Time: 9:00am
Today saw eight riders heading out of VV Park for our Del Dios & Elfin Forest ride - our roster was bolstered by Steve Lambert, who is visiting from North Carolina. Steve lives in the high country around Boone and had no problems with our hills!
And we had plenty of hill time on today's ride... sure, no mountains (looks like the Wednesday riders - [Ed, Steve,&...?] - will get to do that on a Mount Palomar ride), but we hit the rollers with enough regularity to rack up about 3,400'.
So, anyone who succumbed to Mardi Gras indulgence by partaking of the Peterson's Doughnuts offerings can rest assured that they burned off many more calories than they consumed!
Next week's ride is a shorter one... Fairbanks Ranch Loop Date: Tuesday February 19, 2013 Time: 9:00am Loop around Fairbanks Ranch with a good climb over Black Mountain and a fun descent on Rancho Diegueno Road.
Lastly, a Special Notice for anyone looking for a unique cycling event:
Consider riding the "Ay Chihuahua! Century", presented by the Ramona Fun Riders to benefit the Ramona Senior Center and Ramona Volunteer Fire Dept.
This fantastic RFR adventure climbs through beautiful pine covered hills to the historic town of Julian and then descends nine miles down Banner Grade to the warm desert. At Scissors Crossing you'll head south on the Great Overland Stage Route and enjoy the next 50, mostly downhill and flat, miles to Ocotillo. The last flat leg goes east skirting the Mexican border to El Centro for the post-ride dinner and Fiesta!! Riders will return to Santa Ysabel in luxury coaches with reclining seats and a restroom. There will be a moving van, with large thick blankets between each bike, to transport your bicycle safely back.
You'll also get a breakfast, a lunch, and plenty of SAG support. RFR has your back on this ride!
All the weather forecasts were predicting clearing skies after nine AM, but it sure didn't turn out that way. Instead there was an abundance of cool, damp, gloom. Not that it dampened our enthusiasm for today's ACHD RIDE: we had a good turnout of six dedicated souls - all fortified with lights and windbreakers!
The group followed a meandering route out of Poway up to Lake Hodges before turning back past 4S Ranch and Santa Luz and hooking up with the 56 Bike Path. That meant riding on a few new paths and roads that aren't on our usual routes - and we chalked up plenty of climbing in the process.
The ride back on the 56 brought us to Sabre Springs, where it was an easy hop to the Champagne Bakery in Carmel Mountain Ranch for some hot drinks and pastries.
Next week, a classic route... Del Dios & Elfin Forest Date: Tuesday February 12, 2013 Time: 9:00am Hilly route featuring Del Dios outbound and Elfin Forest inbound.
